Amethyst is considered a Semi-Precious Stone; but only if it is a rich purple; clear of any inclusions (internal flaws; debris, etc.) and has good uniformity of color; no zoning or bands of light, dark.

When cut and polished well, it is quite pretty, and the darkest ones (especially when a second flash of color such a violet, or red can be seen) can fetch a price of approximately $40.00 to $60.00 a carat.

A very large specimen, potentially, will demand a price much higher than that per carat, because it is much rarer for a larger stone to possess near perfection as a smaller specimen.

However, like any Gemstone; Diamond, Sapphire, etc. most that are found are not Gem grade and are just 'pretty' and worth not much more than that.

For example; 80% of Diamonds mined are not considered good enough for Gemstones; but are invaluable for the tool industry.

Only sentimental value. Amethyst is a common mineral. If you found it in the field then that's cool, but not worth very much at all. Could make a good specimen though.
