Prior to the constitution, the US had a different form of government, governed by a document called the Articles of Confederation.

The "President" under the Articles of Confederation was not quite the same as what we think of in today's form of government. The President was the ranking official over the Congress, not the executive/project management type of position it is today.

There were other "Presidents" prior to John Hanson. Some were President prior to the Articles of Confederation being ratified...thus not really making them President I guess. Two others served as President under the Articles prior to Hanson, Samuel Huntington and Thomas McKean. Hanson was the first person to serve a full term.

Samuel Huntington is the correct answer because he served when the United States officially became known as the 'President of the United States in Congress Assembled.'.

On March 1, 1781 the title of the office changed, but Samuel Huntington remained president. Thomas McKean was the first President simply titled “President of the United States” in an official document.

There was no position of Vice President in 1781.

it is troubling how many people really don't know this answer,, our youth are not to blame,, it is up to parents and teachers to educate our children,, unfortunately the Rush Limbaugh generation,,, have been asleep at the wheel,, squawking more about who their president is sleeping with,, rather than who he is,, and if he is representing the taxpayers,,, but America will have to suffer the actions of George W. Bush and his current VP, Mr. Cheney,, instead of benefiting as we did 220 years ago from President George Washington.

George Washington was the first president, and if you mean current vice prez, it's Dick Cheney. If you mean the first Vice President, I think it was Thomas Jefferson.
