You're right.
If someone says they don't care what others think, I think it is just wishful thinking on their part. If they say it enough, they might start to believe it because it is better to believe your own lies that to be affected by reality.
What other people think should affect you, especially what they think about you, even if you might think that they're too busy thinking about what you think about them to pay attention to you, well, you get my point.
What do you think of my answer? I care to know THAT answer.

You are right. Most people are not interested in controlling their emotions. However most people also don`t realize how much they are affected by outside influences. Furthermore they also don`t realize the effect of their mechanical thoughts and feelings. Here is where the exceptions come in. There are individuals who do realize what these effects are and decide to work at becomming masters of their own realities .
Being arrogant is one of the mechanical traits that they would work on. I know what you mean by that. I recently was at a 5+star resort where most of the clients were extremely arrogant and it was ugly and unfriendly.
You are partly right about the lying. If someone says I don`t care, the subject is caring. Actually they are wrong. They don`t intend to lie, but they are not telling the truth, they are mistaken. Why? Because the words used for the thinking and speaking process is important. In order to be correctly expressing what they intend to say, they ought to say something like..... I use my own judgement and common sense when making my decisions. They do not realize that saying I don`t care has the same effect on their reality as saying I do care. They were never taught this in school or by their parents, so how would they know? It is new knowledge.

Yes you are right, they are lying. In my opinion there are three types of people.
One who do everything just so as to look better in the view of others. The worst of all. Everything they do is artificial. They always want to know what others think and all their lives are influenced by others.
Next, the so called people, who say that they do not care about what others think. They try to do things their own way but still can not resist the temptation of knowing what others are really thinking about them. They first want to know what others think and then they try to ignore them.
But then I believe there is this third category. They do everything their own way and never notice what others say. These people truly never notice anyone or get influenced anytime.
Well I haven't met anyone who fits the third category perfectly. But yeah, if you have read Ayn Rand's "Fountainhead", the protagonist Howard Roark is a perfect example.

Lying... I know a lot of people who are obsessed with keeping up appearances, and keeping up with the trends, but they always claim to "not care what people think of me". So do they run out to buy a $400 Juicy Couture bag that everyone else has, just for shits and giggles?

People are sometimes lying, but I think that it depends on what type of person we deal with. An introvert will never care about other people's opinions. An extrovert will always care...

People say that they don't care for what others think only for a specific case.
This does not apply for all that he does. Maybe for another case he will really consider or mind the comments.
What he means only is that for a specific case his stand is already firmed or decided, and he would defend it, and not be bothered much for people to say.

You're choosing to see all people you come across who have a single quality, as someone you already know all about just because you've met a person with a quality they happen to both share.
I can see the insanity in this kind of thinking....

No, its not that, I think that the people that mention that phrase are people who have a level of self-esteem. They don't let what other people think about them lower that special feeling, so they avoid that by saying "I dont care what people think about me'. for example:
I tell it to myself too, If im dressed in a way that someone doesn't like it, and they end up saying something about it, thats what i say to myself, like "ahh, whatever, its what i feel most comfortable with not what he/she feels"
in other words: I dont care what people think about me"

People that don't care what others think would not say "I don't care what others think." They are so engrossed in what others think that they actually spend the time to make that statement.
A person that truly doesn't care what others think would never make that statement.

They are not lying, they are just that selfish and immature. If they last long enough, eventually they grow up. Live your life as you feel God warrents, the rest is out of your control, so don't let it bother you.
