I have recently taught teens who had very strong views (with not justification) against homosexuality use derogatory terminology (mostly heard in song lyrics) - one 13 year old refers to himself as a "pimp" 'cause he thinks it's cool, not because he really is or because he really understands its implications. I'm a new teacher and am shocked everyday at the things I hear. If you are a teen, I'd love to hear from you especially....but all answers welcome! Thanks!

unfortunately as you know children learn what they live and the behavior starts in the home. The parents are the first that need education, but that probably won't happen. Just do your best to reinforce the positive and let them know what is not appropriate. I work with kids and find they usually are open to positive suggestions---good luck

Thirteen years old? I didn't have an open mind when I was thirteen. My beliefs were based on what I heard and/or watched. I wouldn't expect a thirteen year old to be tolerant of anything that he/she has never been personally exposed to. I think it's too early to say that they are ignorant. It's hard to have deep discussions with young teens. I'm eighteen now and I've changed a lot since I was thirteen.

Model tolerance and dispel derogatory terminology. Usually when confronted with the actual meaning of a word and it's implications in society teens (who dont enjoy being ignorant) will drop it. Otherwise I find if I use the slang myself they get sick of it pretty quickly.
