I assume you are referring to Windows automatic updates and other for common applications.

In mass they tend to barely effect a systems speeds, some updates even help a system to continue to run faster.

They come from a authorized author, normally the company that is registered to the product you are using. The updates are stored on a server by the company, and the application you are using is linked directly to this sever. If an update is detected it is downloaded,

Most automatic updates for software are extremely safe. Errors are unlikely but you are still advised to keep active and up to date anti - virus on your system.

Please email me for further help.. or if this not what you require

Microsoft updates come from ... Microsoft.

I am unaware of any microsoft updates containing
viri, but the entire software suite is prone to viri
by its very design.

If you have the opportunity to do so, I would
replace your Windows operating system with
one of:

http://fedora.redhat.com
http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.debian.org
http://www.ubuntu.org
http://www.slackware.org
http://www.freebsd.org
http://www.opensolaris.org

They're free, more reliable and make better use
of the hardware - and much less susceptible to
viri.
