if you have the engine rebuilt make sure they are rebuilding top and bottom engine. otherwise it will blow out the one that is not rebuilt. i would suggest having it rebuilt with Honda parts or replacing the engine with a new one. its a Honda so its worth it.
and this time teach your wife how to pay better attention to her car and it is changes. that will save you from any future problems with the new or rebuilt engine.
remember Honda parts for Honda cars only.

first of all, you can buy a motor for less than 600 bucks for a honda. i have. second, it would be worth the time and effort to swap the motor. since its an LX its most likely a vtec. these soch (single overhead cam) motors can be had for about 300 to 500 bucks, depending on mileage. are you planning on on doing this yourself? or getting a mechanic to do it? if you do it, it will save you about 500 bucks. theres 800 dollars in an engine swap. and most of your parts will fit the new one. and i'm not sure what you mean by "blow" up, but it might not be as bad as you think.

Replacing an engine is a huge undertaking, even if you find the engine as cheap as you say your quoted, the labor will kill you(upwards of 1k), it might just be worth looking for a cheap $1500 car, sorry.

A USED engine in good condition, with a warranty can cost anywhere from $600 to $1,200.Then you have to look for a good mechanic with a good track record, that can be expensive. You can get a low quote for labor, but you know what they say....You get what you pay for.
