You should ask your child if that is something he/she wants are they willing to pay for it... Normally when u ask a child thing it makes them reconsinder there wants and needs.... Everyone in this world now of days has a phone so finding a phone in an emergency or just for getting a ride home is not a problem. Your child just wants a cell phone because everyone else does... It doesn't seem as though your child really NEEDS one... I mean if he/she is very active with sports, music, staying after school and may need to call for a ride chances someone else has one is good or you could get a track phone and have your child pay for it.... I think a 12 or even a 15 year old having a cell phone is not un-nessacary... They don't need phones this early or atleast not until they drive or get a job and can pay for it themselves....

I got mine when i was 12 and it was great because when i had sports practice after school and it would finish at different times,i would just call my mom to come pick me up.I wouldn't recommend the firefly unless you are willing to go out and buy your kid another cell phone in about a year. With the firefly you can only have about 4 numbers registered. In a year, they are going to want to have all of there friends names and numbers in there contacts. Also, as a punishment, you can take it away when your kid is bad.It will make them think about what they did. They will probably really want there cell phone back and not make the same mistake again!

Some 12 year olds are responsible enough, it just depends on if you think they are ready for it. They do have those "firefly" phones, where your kid is only allowed to call a certain number of preprogrammed people. That, however might not be what he is wanting it for. If your kid really is justv wanting it because its a fad, then you should be asking if their responsible enough with the phone, and also the usage of it.

I suggest a kid's network. For example: Tmobiles Kidconnect. You could then add him to your plan. Oh, and the good reason is: What if he thinks someone's following him? Or, something else involving his safety. Not having a cell phone will make him an easy target for predators.

I think that 12 is kind of young, if you ask me. I am sixteen, and I refuse to get a cell phone because I don't NEED it. Cell phones don't need all these wild and crazy tricks because cell phones are for emergencies. I don't work (because I babysit and study a lot) and I don't go out much and so I don't need a cell phone. When I go out somewhere, I am usually with someone. If I'm with no one, I tell my parents where I am, what I am doing, who I am with, and when I should be home by.

Don't break down and buy him one!!! I'm 13 and I know.. all kids do with them is play games and try to look cool. They are a waste of money unless he really needs one. Even if he offers to pay for it AND the bill, don't let him have one- kids (and teachers) know who the bad parents and spoiled kids are. The right age is when he gets a drivers license- 16 and not a day before.

it depends on u and ur child... If u think ur child is ready then u shuld or even if ur child is out alot with friends it culd be ur child wants it for safety! I personally had a cell phone @ 13 it took me 2 yrs to talk my parents into it.. I 1st started out 1 a prepaid phone to prove I was responsible for a plan phone... try that... tell ur child the phone is to b used for Emergency issues only to get in touch with u and other family members when absolutly necassary

Get the child a "pay as you go plan" and make them responsible for paying for the minutes. Do NOT put them on a family plan. I learned the hard way, my daughter racked up almost $300.00 worth of phone charges and guess who's name was on the contract! After that I gave her a Pay as you go plan until she was able to pay for her own phone plan.

my parents got me a cell phone when I started getting more independent....they are really over protective and need to know who I'm with, what I'm doing, and where I am 24/7

that's about the only good thing about over protective parents
