It is pretty stupid to give a gift of a pet without finding out FOR SURE if such a gift is wanted - You could illustrate the point to her by suggesting that you are thinking of buying them an animal for Christmas - just not sure which one yet - I suspect they will ask you not to.

As for the other poster, the cost is not about 99p food - it is the cost of vaccinations, innoiculations, trips to the vet for this that and the other. the cost of the chewed sofa, shat on rug and when it bites someone.

If you like dogs and WANT to keep dogs - go for it - many folks think they are fab pets - but the idea of keeping a pet because a foolish person dumped on on you is crazy. If you canont afford it either, then give it away, take to pound or return to previous owner.

As for them throwing a fit? Why the hell should they - it was their stupidity that caused the problem in the first place.

Take it to pound / leave it at givers house - with a warning that if they return it to yours, you will ask the police to intervene to prevent them from abandoning THEIR animal at your home.

Keep the puppy, as I'm sure that your child wants it. You can buy dog food at the 99 cent store, which is pretty affordable for everyone. If you go to your local petco you can also find out when they have low cost and no cost clinics so the puppy can get his shots.
