how much can a prospective employer find out about your past ?? credit, medical,work, etc ...???

Anything they want. Your Social Security Number opens a broad spectrum for them, or their agents to view. From your credit history, criminal records (convictions only), driving/accident records to your past employment, to name a few.

They can't ask for your medical records. Other than that, they can get your credit report and work history.
