C: The US bought Alaska from the Russia for I believe 7 million dollars in 1867. I remember the year because it was two years after the end of the Civil War (my mind just works that way)

C Seward had the foresight to know it was strategically important to the United States. Most Americans at the time thought it was nothing more than a frozen wasteland. Of course he was right and they were wrong. Ever been here? I highly recommend it!
