The directions say to put this word problem below into a linear equation in 1 variable and then solve. Meaning, make an equation using only the variable x instead of using x's and y's. The whole thing is somewhat confusing to me. Can someone illustrate how i'm supposed to come up with an equation using only one variable from this word problem that has me stumped.
The hit movie Titanic earned more in Europe than in the United States. As of September 1998, the average cost for a movie ticket in the United States was $4.59. In Great Britain, it cost $10.59 and in Germany, $8.42. If 74 million tickets were sold in Great Britain and Germany, how many would have to be sold in each country to earn $686 million? Round answer to the nearest million.
