Are professors eccentric and different from others? And why is this so?

If I want to be a professor - will I have to be highly eccentric and overly special?

Many times extremely smart people are actually the ones that do not care what others think about them.

LOL. I too have noticed the same thing, and I have also observed that the truly eccentric ones are the ones with a PhD. behind their name. That doctrate makes people cookoo sometimes hehehe. That's why I have decided to stop at the masters level. Another thing that I noticed while in college is that most of the professors I had who had their PhD's are atheist. I don't think you have to be eccentric to be a professor, but it does help with class census. A dry old professor is not going to gather the crowds that the eccentric professor would. It helps with the tenure possibly. Also, many professors have their nose in some sort of research all the time or are writing some kind of article or are working on their own research. Not much time for normal living when you are involved in that kind of stuff.

professors are not more eccentric than people in other professions, maybe they just get to show it more! If you arent eccentric to begin with, either being a professor may make you eccetric or it wont. so what. we all have quirks and diffrences, big deal. typing on a computer board gives you carpal tunnel, but are you not gonna type just because of that?what i wanna know is, why are psychology professors so weird? talk bout an odd group. in this case something draws them to that subject in particular, so just dont major in psychology!

I think professors are eccentric becuase they spend so much time divoted to one thing and being superior to their students some of them begin to think they are gods or something.

I've had a couple of down to earth professors (they were still weird in their own way, but less weird than the others).

Spend 10 yrs in college getting your Phd....doing nothing but reading and writing and researching about a given subject, then start adding teaching a specific subject and the next time you look up you'll be eccentric too...
