The horror of the holocaust.
Survival - going on no matter what.
Trust (and lack thereof) and determination.
Communication between the generations.
How our life determines the person we are.

Those are just the most obvious ones - it's a great book, one of the best graphic novels ever. I really suggest you read it, it's well worth it.

overcoming obstacles. the whole thing is a holocaust story, thats the strongest theme i could find in a story like that.

Jeez. I remember reading this the day of the Sept 11 Attacks. It taught me what real terror was.
