The reason why they created a play-in game was because the addition of another NCAA conference (Mountain West Conference in 2001). Before 2001, the NCAA decided to have a 64-team tournament consisting of 34 at-large bids and 30 automatic bids, the winner of each conference tournament (because there were 30 conferences at the time). Once the Mountain West Conference was added, there would be 31 automatic bids for the tournament. Since the NCAA vowed to keep 34 at large bids, they decided to have 65 teams in the tournament with a play-in game to determine the final 64.

Hope this helps

They should have ZERO play in games. It's the dumbest thing around. If you are worried a good team is not in because there are too many "low" teams then expand the overall tourney. Perhaps as you say the top 4 all get 1 round byes which let's in a few more of the bubble teams. Personally I would like it cut back to just 16 or 32 teams. No one Ranked 9-16 ever makes it. It's more TV revenue for more games though.

... or eight or 16 or 32. The play-in game is a silly idea. Having it just so that Stanford or Arkansas can get in and lose in the first or second round is ridiculous. Think Florida A&M feels good about bothering to win its conference tournament, and then going to Dayton, Ohio, to play in a game few notice? I don't think so.

Let's go to 64. If you need 65, have two at-large teams play for spot number 64.
