hi i've posted a question on this just earlier today, but i dont think the answeres i recieved were right. i have a 1999 DODGE DAKOTA 3.9L V6 AUTOMATIC TRANNY wih 90k.
there are absolutly no problems while the truck is ideling in park or neutral, but when i engauge it in reverse, drive, 2nd or 1st gear, a very annoying tingy ratteling sound comes from under the hood. it almost sounds as if something were loose and tinging around somehwere down there.
people are telling me its the heat shield, but arnt those the things that cover the headers? and wouldnt they rattle no matter what gear the tranny is in (if they were loose?)
i'm thinking its the timing chain & sprockets. is that a possibility? i've heard they go bad after about 50k on a lot of 3.9 dakotas.
PLEASE HELP!!! I'VE JUST RECENTLY UPGRADED ALMOST EVERYTHING IN THE TRUCK TO MAKE IT "SHOWY" I'M ONLY 17 BUT I KNOW A HELL OF A LOT ABOUT CARS BUT THIS ONE'S STUMPED ME! THE SOONER THE RESPONSE THE BETTER! THANKS GUYS!

Well, there are heat shields on the headers or exhaust manifolds, but there is also one on each of the catalytic converters, as well as any resonators. My Mustang does the same thing, but only in 'drive' because the engine speed slows somewhat, causing just the right resonance frequency to make it rattle. If you put it in 'drive' and it does it, hold the brake, and bring the RPM up to the same level it would be if it were in 'park'. If it goes away, this is most likely your problem.

Good luck with your rattling woes!

Check these things, engine and trans mounts. If one or more of your mounts are bad ,it may cause the exhaust to rub or bump against something (exhaust shielding) or produce cracks in the exhaust manifold or tubes that cause vibration when the engine is in gear. The exhaust may also hit against the the vehicle's frame,Observe the engine under the hood and have someone place the vehicle in gear and then reverse putting torque on the mounts, the engine will move around under the hood quite a bit (if any mounts are bad).Make sure you chock the drive wheels and set the e-brake before you try this!

some times no matter how smart you think you are it takes two people too solve a problem ,,get a friend to put the car in drive with there foot on the brake and then you look under the hood or under the truck and then try and determine where the noise is coming from. this may help yah.

check the heat shield on top of the catalyic converter, it's known for making that sound when loose or starting to rust off.

you should have your timing checked, it sounds like you have a loose chain.
