I am going to the hospital Friday and they are giving me some type of cervix pill to soften it and i guess induce me. I was just wondering about the epidural ans what I can expect. Does the shot itself hurt and how intense will the pain be with it. Oh and also has anyone been given the pill before I would like to know what to expect.

Well, I can't answer about being induced because I wasn't. With an epidural, you don't get a shot. They insert a very small tube into your back, by your lower spine. It's basically an IV. It pumps the medicine into your spinal nerves. I'm not exactly sure what the general level of pain is with the epidural, because mine didn't work. So I pretty much felt everything. It was painful, uncomfortable, and at times unbearable. But overall, it was well worth it.

Edit:
Why the thumbs down?

I'm not sure about the pill you're talking about but as far as the epidural goes, I was scared to death of getting it because I had heard lots of bad stories about it. Well I couldn't take the pain anymore and finally got it. I didn't feel a single thing. They numb the area first and then they give the epidural. I didn't feel a thing. I just felt the relief right after. Another benefit of the epidural is that it made me dialate quickly. I went from 5 cen-10 in 10 minutes.

With my epidural they gave me a shot of local anesthetic to numb the injection site before giving me the epidural. It wasn't really painful when the did the epidural but it did feel a bit funny and it sort of felt like they were scraping my back. My legs then went warm and then every thing went numb from my chest down. It didn't take very long for the epidural to take effect.

Getting an epidural is different for everyone but with me I didn't feel the needle I did however feel the plastic that they put on, after a few mintues though I didn't feel any contractions. I have heard that getting an epidural will sometimes slow your labor down, but I am not a 100% sure about that.

Epidural all the way!!! They give you a little pinch, not bad and then cold sensation adn then...relief.. No worries. It is well worth it. I have heard that induced contractions are painful but so are non induced contractions. I had an epidural with both if my kids and they were AWESOME. Congradulations and have fun with the new baby. They are so much fun

The pill they give you is a vaginal implant that is supposed to ripen your cervix. Without that, your body isn't ready to experience the contractions and I've heard that is excruciating.

I, too, am being induced on Friday, but I don't get the implant. I'm already at 3 cm. So... I guess we'll be in pain together! Good luck!

Personally after having 6 kids myself, I did not like the epidual, I had it once. I had one c section and I would not recommend it to anyone. Natural all the way!!! The pill to soften your cervex is no big deal you won't even feel it. Inducing your labor with pictocin bring on the contractions quicker and harder. But it really depends on you. To make laboe easier, walk, walk alot even in the hospital. labor will be easier, I promise. You can walk untill your water breaks.

There are alternatives to epidurals. I myself refuse to have one. I will not let someone stick a needle into my spinal column! There are so very many bad side effects your can have from this! There are plenty of other meds you can use. Demorol is great!

First, don't let them use Cytotec. Google "cytotec induction" or anything similar for a whyfor on that.

Second, do you really need to be induced?

Google, again. "Risks of induction."

"The results of this study suggests that induction of labour is associated with a higher risk of caesarean section and of some perinatal adverse outcomes. Induction of labour should be reserved for cases where maternal and perinatal benefits outweigh the risk of these complications."
