I assume it's generally because it's not worth the trouble (or even possible) to prove everything in every case.

Assumptions are made because they lead to hypotheses which are then tested against the assumption to refine a theory.
If the theory can be replicated then the assumption is proved valid.
Thus, assumption is a basic first step towards valid theory. However, be forewarned. Untested assumptions make an ***_out of U and ME

Assumptions are made for two main reasons:
1. To make sure that everybody understands the baseline
2. External factors (outside your control) are stated in order to achieve particular results.

Assumptions are made for the same reason an entire philosophy section on Yahoo! answers is made... to make people sound smart by coming up with conclusions to random questions. (:

i think we automatically make assumptions based on our previous knowledge. its really interesting, like someone says soemthing,, and our brain pulls out in a second everything weve ever heard, did, watched happen, etc. on what is related to the thing the person said. i find myself doing it all of the time. really interesting.

Because it's easier than thinking. Most people don't think for themselves; they simply choose their beliefs from what others have told them. It's downright tragic.
