My wife is pretty petite, however our first baby was 8.5 lbs. She was on the border of gestational diabetes and the doctor decided to put her on a diet.

You said your wife is petite and even though a 5 pound baby may sound small as long as the baby is healthy I wouldn't be worried. My son was born at 5.3 pounds and now he's a whopping 26 pounds @ 1 year old =)

Five pounds is perfectly normal for a small petite woman.Better a small baby than the health problems associated with allot of weight gain which is unhealthy for the mom as you know (and the baby).Your baby doesn't have to be fat to be healthy.Congrats on your new bundle and stop worrying as I'm sure your doctor knows what he is doing.

Small, but I have a friend that is over 6 feet tall that was 4 lbs at birth. I would have liked to seen him then! ;)

Ultrasounds are not always accurate. I only gained 7 lbs. when I was pregnant and they told me my son was going to by 9 pounds {I had the ultrasound done 4 days before he was born}. Well... they were very wrong... he was 7 lbs. exactly.

That's a little smaller than average, but it doesn't mean there will be complications. Some babies are just smaller. Maybe this baby will be petite like your wife.

It seems small but if the dr has said that everything is ok then it should be.
