Performance is high, stability is low, and unless you have honed your skills on the street for over a year, they will sling you on your @ss before you can blink.
If it's your first bike, forget it. Get something smaller, used, and droppable so you can learn first. Otherwise, go ahead and be a squid.

Again it really comes down to looks and what feels comfortable for you. I have an 05' GSXR 600 and love it. My buddy has a 03' R6. I beat him in a straight line but his bike handles a little better. All bikes can be modified, so choose based on looks and comfort, performance can be changed later.

They are both good bikes... personally I like the gsxr looks way better, but that is just my opinion. The riding position is slightly different on the R6. Test ride both and see which one you like more. Miles are not the most important thing in evaluating a bikes condition. You want a bike which has been well maintained and hasn't been abused.... better a bike /w 30k which has been taken care of than a bike with 8k which has been abused badly.

I drove them both, I had a GSXR 600 last year, I'll get another GSXR this year, I find the Suzuki more forgiving and stable, the R6 is more twitchy. My rear tire is worn down rounded not with a big flat down the middle so I do know how to corner fast.

Unless you are a very good rider, and i mean VERY good, there will be no significant difference in terms of performance or handling. What does matter is which you feel most comfortable on.
I wouldn't really go for one with more than 15,000 miles. They will go on for a lot longer but they are just about right at that milage. Old enough to be fairly cheap but still new enough to be in excellent condition.

I would suggest getting the GSX-R 750 or 1000 in my area, everyone out grows the 600's in two weeks time.
Don't buy a sport bike with more than 5k miles and make sure you buy the bike from an adult rider, who's taken care of the bike.
