Fordman, I see your reasoning, but you are not entirely correct. When you time how long it takes to fill the gallon, you then divide that by 20 minutes to calculate the amount of water. Let's say it takes 5 minutes to fill the gallon jug. Then we know it takes 4 times that amount in twenty minutes. So, a 20 minute shower would use 4 gallons.

BATHS! always use more water!! to fill a tub with enough water to bathe you need 25-30 gallons of water at least in the tub... because of the way water runs thru a shower head it APPEARS as though a whole lot is flowing thru however you would be there a long time trying to catch 25 gallons of water from that shower head!! TRY IT.

The typical shower head will pass about 2.5 gallons per minute for a total of 50 gallons. Most tubs are between 50 and 60 gallons so a 20 minute shower is about the same as a soak in a typical tub.

TRICK QUESTION. It would all depend on the flow rate of the shower head and the size and depth of the tub. One way to really tell would be to get a gallon container and turn the shower on and then time how long it takes to fill the gal. container. Multiply that by 20 and you know how much water it takes for the shower. Now fill up the bathtub and take your bath. Instead of opening the drain. Use that gal. container and measure the amount of water in the tub. You can pour the water down the toilet. Then you have a definite answer.

I think it would depend on just how much water flows through the shower head. Normally, 20 min of running water through a shower head does not use as much water as running water through the tub faucet for 20 min. If you want to check for your house, plug the drain on the tub and take a 20 min shower and see how much water accumulates in the tub. My guess is a deep bath (tub near full).

Well, I would guess a shower because of the constant running faucet., I always shower after a long soak anyway so I use double the water anyway. Is this a personal question or something for school?
