A system for video games is expensive because you need a good video card, and a good sound card, a higher end processor and more memory to handle the load a game causes on the system, especially the newer games that come out.
Any laptop will provide you with what you need to surf the web and do reports, and should be fine. Shop between the major competitors (HP and DELL) see who has the better computer at the lower price.

Hi.... for basic stuff,... $600 should be o.k.... For gaming as well,... that wont be enough, because a basic cost laptop would be struggling to even handle mid level gaming.... I'm not sure which country your'e in, or what their dollar value is but in Australiayou would need $1,200 minimum..... You would need a Intel Core 2 duo processor@ 1.7 ghz,... 2 gb's RAM,... and 80 gb's Hard drive.... Video graphic's at around 256 mgb's would also be needed... This size hardware should cover all your need's easily,... but to safeguard your hard earned saving's, look up site's on the internet, under "GAMING COMPUTER'S",... and check out all their operating so you will know how,... PROCESSOR'S,... RAM,.. and HARD DRIVE'S work.... Their's nothing worse than buying a low cost computer, that take's age's to load something onto your screen... Check out the different laptop brand's on the internet and look for the .... REVIEW... section's, so you can read people's comment's on how they perform,... and this will help you decide on a brand... Pay a little bit extra, to give you a full 3 year warranty, and this will give you excellent cover against anything expensive to repair... Also,... dont buy 2nd hand, because the warranty cover is crap, and you'd be lucky to get a 1 year limited cover on it.... Toshiba,.. and... Acer.. sell very good laptop's with plenty of big hardware,.. at a lower price than other laptop maker's, so giving them a check out, is definitely worth a go...
But,... as mentioned earlier,.. check out lot's of info, on ... Processor's,... RAM,... Hard Drive's,.. and Graphic Card's,.. by typing each heading seperately into Yahoo's Internet Search Box,.. check out each one's info,.. and this will assist you in making a good choice of laptop for your buck's...

It'll be hard to get one like that if you want to do gaming as well. I would think of buying a pre-owned laptop or one from a year or two ago that hasn't been sold to keep it under $600. I would recommend a Core 2 Duo (2.0GHz) processor, 512MB to 1024MB (1GB) of RAM, 80 to 100GB hard drive, 128 to 256MB video adapter, 15.4" widescreen display. Either Dell, Gateway, HP, or Toshiba.
