Many water pumps have a "weep hole" on the housing. This creates an intentional leak to let the owner know that the bearings in the water pump have failed. Typically the leak will only be present with the car running and warmed up. Additionally, if the bearings are suspect, you can easily check them by removing the belt and wiggling the water pump pulley from side to side. Any play indicates bearing wear or failure.

Depends on the make, Gm always has a weep hole in the bottom of the pump and it does leak more when car is off then when running unless its really bad then all the time. Best would be to pressurize your radiator and feel around or look for a leak.

there is a small hole in most water pumps that is visible from underside of water pump, and you can see the coolant leaking while the engine is not running.,,,maybe its the water pump gasket. You pretty much need to get under the car with a light to see where your leak is coming from. Its alot harder to try and tell from under the hood..where exactly the leak is if indeed it is the water pump.

water pumps have weep holes in them usually on the bottom, you can see if it's leaking there or around the gasket, some cars have water pumps located behind the timing cover therefore you can't see it, but you can look around the cover itself, you may be able to see it leaking around the bottom of the cover.
