Early Greeks believed that love had limitations to its beauty and that beyond those limits, the emotion's power became dark, dangerous, and dreadful. For them, love was "two-faced", being a necessity in life but also a danger.

Through Aphrodite, early Greeks believed that though
erotic love was a central life force, it had two sides- making it
necessary in life but also a danger.

Ambivalence = "love/hate"

Early Greeks had ambivalence toward love because it could provide beauty, but could become dark, dangerous and dreadful; this included erotic love as well as romantic love. Aphrodite brought the Greeks hope and the awareness of the transforming power of love and beauty, but could also bring out the dark side of mankind through envy, lust, and jealousy sparked by beauty.

Early Greeks believe that love had limitations to its beauty and that beyond those limits the power of emotions became dark, dangerous, and dreaful. With the influence of Aphrodite, Greek goddess for love (double check that), love was no longer just a necessity but also a very real danger.
