I have a 1995 Forst Escort. I recently was driving and it just stopped pulling. It would crank but not move. I had it towed home and when I cranked it, it would move but made a loud sound. I let it sit for a week and cranked it again and it won't move now. When you give it gas in park it makes a rattling or knocking sound at the transmission. ICould it be anything other than the transmission?

Hmmm, the 1995 Forst Escort must be the limited edition, that I have never heard of. LOL

Well first Get a Haynes Repair Manual at the local Auto Zone or auto parts store in your area. It will troubleshoot and show you how to fix your vehicle. Also on the Auto Zone site has a section for vehicle maintenance

First check your oil. if that is REALLY low you may have thrown a rod and it means another engine.

Now if the engine gets too hot when driving then the car will stop. If your oil is ok, is there any white substance on the stick. This indicates you have water in the oil.

Does your car run or not? Crank means you can start the engine or crank it over. But does it run. If it runs, then wait a couple of minutes and check the transmission oil. If it is low on oil then the motor will run but when you put it in gear the car will not move forward.

You will soon discover, grasshopper, that noise that sounds from one place may come from another. Check your fluid levels. If you have any more problems let me know if when you try to start it you get the noise and the engine does not run or you get the noise and the engine runs. BUT AFTER you check the oil fluid levels, well at least the engine oil.

sounds like your transmission is shot, you will either have to have it rebuilt or replaced.
