well to start with Ive made clocks 60 years now i know Every clock spring,jewel, thats on the stinking market today..it does in fact go off,think of it this way, if A bomb is attached to a clock,it goes off! then BOOMMMMMMMMM, see where i'm going here ? Oh yah the BOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! 10 please? ty

Because in the old days, they would wind the alarm clock, so when the time is up, the spring lets off its tension and causes it to ring.

If yo so a girl in the street yelling at her man all of a sudden out of the blue would you think shw was going off or coming on

I always wonder this myself..I even had some friends who would say my car alarm came on...maybe you should ask someone who knows why they say "that bomb is about to go off"...when it also means its about to come on...just a suggestion..i but i would like to know this myself..

perhaps that since it emits a (loud) noise, the noise is coming/going off it....
yeah that was a stretch :-P
