If you are a Calif State Auto Assn. or AAA member, they help plan trips and have maps and accomodation books. If not a member, you can join. They also have emergency service which can come in handy .
Otherwise, I would suggest you buy some good maps (including city maps for more detail if needed). Borders book store is where we have found some good ones. Open the map up and look at it before you purchase -- some are better, easier to read, than others.
If it is really important, don't depend entirely on Mapquest. Sometimes it isn't up to date or is wrong and they won't correct their map or instructions. At least that is what a hotel manager told me when I complained about the directions to get to their hotel on Mapquest. I got lost but was in the neighborhood and there was still day light -- so I was able to finally find it by asking a security guard at a property on the same street.

Yes...forget that idea.
Finding your way around and sometimes getting lost is half of the fun. You need to see things and meet people off the beaten path. As you travel you will learn this is the truth.
Don't plan every detail, just get a good idea and wing it from there.
