The Cycladic figures would rather amaze you. there are a series of islands off the coast of Greece that basically form a circle. These are called the Cyclades. the ones that I am familiar with are made of clay. There are many forms many with incised markings on them and others with sculpted features. They are made of clay. They evolved over time into being more and more cross shaped with the incised features and the sculpted features becoming less dominated. In the later ones, they will remind you of the Egyptian Ankh, but don't have the circle in the top like the ankh does.

Research on the net produced this information. If you type Cycladic Figure into a search engine like Google you will get links to sites with more information.

"The size and style of Cycladic figurines varies greatly. Some are among the earliest naturalistic sculptures discovered in the Mediterranean area. Others, ... are highly abstract.

Ancient peoples placed figurines like this in grave sites. Their lack of eyes and mouths--as well as their folded arms-- was perhaps intended to depict death. Their gender may indicate that they represented deceased men's wives or a mother goddess."
