Cramped, uncomfortable and dangerous.
Prices were cheap, captains squeezed as many passengers as they could on board to make a profit.
Immigrants slept packed together in the hold or on the deck, many died from disease.
Ships were sometimes lost in storms, an example is the Avalanche which went down with no survivors.

How about this story from my family?

Friederich had lost his wife, and he decided to leave Prussia, where he had been a farm manager, and go to America, where he heard a hard working person could buy his own farm. He took his three small children to Hamburg, where they boarded a ship for the crossing. He didn't have much money, and the family lived on deck. The crossing was rough; the winds icy cold. By the time they reached the St. Lawrence River, only one of his children was left alive, and she was in a coma from high fever. But somehow, she survived; when the ship docked, Friederich took her to a tavern and gave her a shot of whiskey, saying, "Take this, it will make you strong."

It did. She survived to marry and have fifteen children, one of whom was my great-grandmother.

cramped as many as possible were put onto boats. food was terrible and many people got sick. those who died were buried at sea. The smell of rotten food and sickness was overwhelming for some. When the sea got rocky, the crew would close the portholes so no one from below could come up. that caused even more problems because there was hardly any room to breath.
