Because their vocabulary is so small that they cannot think of another pejorative adjective. When someone uses this word in this way, what they mainly display is their ignorance.
Because they have been taught to hate and use hate-spewing, bigoted words.
Because they are inconsiderate to the feelings of others.
Pick one. To me, all three are true.

childrens are commonly incredibly insensitive to what different all people is feeling - quite in childhood, that's marked by way of the re-emergence of egocentrism because of the fact the guy develops the potential to think of greater approximately his/her very own concepts, thoughts, etc. (that's partly why young infants are so self-unsleeping; because of the fact they are paying greater interest to themselves, they anticipate that all people else could desire to be doing the comparable.) Many childrens use the word because of the fact all their acquaintances do. they could or won't recognize ways its use could be viewed offensive or risky by way of others. some childrens use it rather because of the fact it rather is many times a word utilized in a derogatory context by way of at contemporary human beings, and that they want they are going to be perceived as at contemporary in the event that they use it interior the comparable way. they are hiding.

i dont know....i really dont get it. its used in situations that couldnt under any circumstances be what gay means. i think it stems from the fact that gay is bad to some people (not me, i have no issue with it, do your thing) and it just morphed into this insult that has no real meaning. which is why i never say things like "oh, thats gay" cause get over it folks, its not. it can be bad, or lame, or annoying, but its not gay.

I used to be offended by it, but I think it kind of dumbs down everyone else which kind of makes it easier in a sense of dealing with idiots.
I don't really care anymore. I don't think people mean any harm by it, but I definitely refrain from using it in that sense.

they've been raised by bigots...taught that hating those that are "different" are bad. that being gay is bad and, therefore, "gay" becomes a derogatory. these people need to be taught that this is wrong and insulting. people who are gay need to speak up when they hear such language.
of course, the worst of bigots don't give a flying crap about people's feelings, because they've been raised to be insensitive.

Because homosexuality has for so long been viewed by general society as "icky." Using the modern term for "homosexual" is simply an ignorant and immature method of expressing displeasure, which stems from the "icky" views.

I don't know. I guess the same reason we all say that's dumb or thats retarded and stuff like that. Every word we use is always linked back to someone and is offensive. I dont know why ppl use it. I guess because "gays", and or lesbians like myself, are looked down upon so much and someone got bored one day and said hey that's gay when something was bad. Its ridiculous how ppl say that. My cousin is constantly saying that and its annoying. She knows how i feel and it slips.

In a nutshell, it's the middle-school connotation of the work "lame." It's a sign of immaturity, and frankly laced with homophobia.

People who use it just make themselves seem unintelligent. I am quite glad to have friends who never use "gay" as a synonym for stupid. (That's kind of hard to find when one is in high school.)

it upsets me too. even some of my closest friends do it, when i've asked them not to use it in that context.
but it's just another thing that we have to put up with, and another thing to make us stronger.
i genuinely dont think half the people mean to be offensive, they are just very silly.
