st julien was a place that was attacked in the second battle of Ypres . That part of the front was held by a very mix contingent of troops ( french, colonial french , Canadian and Belgium soldiers )
The 22 April there was the gas attack ( with chloorgas ) and the french troops had to bear the full load of it . Luckily the attack front was more on the narrow side and the Canadian and specially the Belgium troops could reorganizes there front line and give from support trenches a flanking fire onto the German troops
On the 24 April the German did a new attack now on the Canadian troops and they had to give way to the attackers .

From then on st julien became German occupied until the 3 battle of Ypres when is was retaken from the Germans

St. Julien was not the battle where poison gas was first used in warfare. It was the Battle of Ypres where the German's launched a chlorine gas against Canadian soldiers, and Canadian troops held their positions for several days, while other troops fled.
