I think we have to live with a lot of self deception because it keeps us a lot more sane. Sometimes if you get too *real* with yourself, you will go crazy. Been there, done that. It's horrible.

Scrutinize every inch of your own personal philosophies and ideals. Ask questions. Challenge yourself. Practice serious and patient introspection. Ask people you feel you can trust, and then scrutinize their own conclusions. And, then, scrutinize your examination of their conclusion, and then those conclusions ad infinitum.
Most importantly: actively study logic science and rationality and adopt them both as serious tools of reasoning and insight into reality.
