Most magazines include their editorial staff on one of the front pages. Locate the managing editor and send them a query letter via e-mail or snail mail detailing your idea. A query letter is simply a brief outline detailing a story idea. Once the editor receives your query, they'll contact you if they're interested. For examples of query letters, do a Google search.

Editors receive an exorbitant amount of mail so make sure your idea stands out and is very professional. It word hurt to study past issues of the magazine to make sure your idea hasn't already been covered.

There are several computer software titles that are for desktop magazine publishing that you could do from your own home.

The paper is manufactured by many companies and comes in many grades. I would suggest that you visit your local print shop. Not only would they be able to explain to you about the different grades of paper, they would have samples on hand that you could see/feel.
