there is a product which is hard to find, its called snake repel, its main ingrediant is sulfur and the snake will be revolted by its prescence. howeevr , you and your family probably do not want to have a yard that smells like sulfur
so, what do you do? I would suggest trimming all hedges, bushes and perennials. keep the yard mantianed and clean. if you do see a garder snake, kill it and check for nest behind obvious barriers like retaingin walls and hedges. The last thing I would suggest, is to see if you cant get a good yard cat. the cat is probably the snakes worst natural enemy.
God Bless

Yeah, they are harmless. Yeah, they are probably even beneficial. However...
I knew a wonderful gardener who because a river rose near her it drove all the snakes from the river area to higher ground....in this case her beautiful yard.
Everyone told her these things, too.
It was not good when there were 3 foot long queen mama snakes rearing their heads up like fricking cobras when cornered in her garage.
It was not good when she grabbed one with stipes that from the corner of her eye as she reached behind her for what she thought was her garden hose.
It was not good when they would corner her in her yard.
It was not good when 8-10 at a time would sun themselves on her deck .
She and her hubby tried to catch and release, but could not get a handle on it in that manner.
They finally redid the foundation of their house (chinked field stone) and got a dog. That combination did the trick.

Why would you want to. Garter snakes eat rodents and bugs that attack your plants/garden. They do no harm. Leave them alone.

Garter snakes are completely harmless...Unless you are a small rodent. Best to keep them. They can keep a lot of critters away.
