Don't buy a pink cot. Buy a lovely really practical one with a side you can lower down with only one hand and teething rails, maybe even one that converts to a toddler bed and will get years of use. Mothercare has some great ones that won't break the bank and then can be re-used if your next one is a boy.

Then buy a £4 pink fairy princess canopy from Ikea. Find some beautiful pink bumpers and fitted sheets and curtains (pillows and quilts should not be used until baby is over 12 months old). Grobag style-sleeping bags are really great until baby is old enough for additional bedding (you can find them on eBay for a fraction of the price). It will be perfect and beautiful and girly. I promise!

I think the reasoning behind why your mother got a pink cot is a little strange! But other than that I don't see a huge issue...if you don't like the cot, accept it graciously but explain that you probably won't be using it (I'm sure she'll notice, it's very hard to hide a cot!) and go out and buy another, or even just sand it back and repaint it. I personally would probably still use it, because not many people have to see what my son sleeps in, plus I don't mind anyway, but thats just me.
