I always hear hispanics say "Viva la raza" or something similar. I was told before that la raza means "the race", so why do hispanics use this bigoted phrase so often? It would be like people yelling "Do it for the white race" or "Horray for black people!". Perhaps this junk is acceptable in hispanicland because they are like 99% brown there, but in the US were there are various cultures it seems offensive

I would say that "Pride in your tribe" is not necessarily racist. However if tht attitude leads to you having a distasteful opinion of another category of people, then your "pride" has become racism.

How can you say ALL Hispanics are racist?? I'm hispanic and some of my best friends are white. When people shout "viva la raza" they are trying to be proud of their background because so many people have been ashamed of being a person of non-white color. Sure, there are going to be some ignorant racist people in the hispanic race just like every other race but don't let them bother you. Everyone should be proud of their background, including white people.

I say "Horray for Black People" all the time. I'm white but I've met a lot of really cool black people. I wish people would quit looking at me funny when I am yelling "Horray for black people" though, it makes me feel self-conscious when they do that.

Some hispanic people probably are racist, just like this Cambodian chick I used to know in Vietnam. She was REALLY racist. She hated EVERYONE, even races that hadn't been invented yet. She even hated Mickey Mouse for having round ears. Well, I guess it takes all kinds, ya know?

You should ask those hispanic fellow what they're saying and what it means and then ask them how to say the same thing about white people. Then you will have something to say about your race and maybe you will feel better.

Good Luck!

You are the racist one, you picked out one race saying are his panics racist....Are you racist? Sure some Hispanics are, but so are some whites. Being racist is singling out one trait to any one race! Therefore saying "Viva la raza" is pride. There is a HUGE difference between pride and racism.

Let's face it. Everybody of every race or ethnicity thinks they are better than anyone else. You and me both may respect all races, but I agree with you. Lately, it seems that the hispanics are alittle "edgy" I think it could also be that we keep singling them out at the main problem of immigration into the US. face it, if they would come over and go through the steps to become a legal citizen, they wouldnt have the stress and the hate for people disliking them for being illegal!

If you are hearing 'Hispanics' use this phrase, then probably they are trying to 'wind you up'.

I live in the Dominican Republic, probably one of the most multi-racial ( certainly as far as skin colour is concerned ) societies in the world. We have everything here from the whitest white to the bluest-black.

There is racism here, but it's clearly very light-hearted, a most common form of address to a dark skinned person here is "Ola Moreno", in English this would translate into "Hi, darkie !", and would probably earn you a thick ear in most places. here it doesn't mean anything, and will most likely raise a smile.

So.........this is the heart of 'Hispaniola', so my vote is no, we are the most tolerant people in the world, from a race-hate point of view.

First of all we do not consider our self's Hispanics we're Latinos and second of all we just use the term "Viva la raza" to take pride in our culture. How is that offensive when we live in the U.S like you said and one of our rights is freedom of speech is it not?

I think they don't care for Americans (like the rest of the world now, thanks pres. Bush).
I don't know why they're all ticked off over the fence we are trying to put up along our southern border. If they're not going to come over here legally, then stay in Mexico!
Viva las blancas! (just kidding)

Any creed is capable of racism. It is not just limited to caucasians. Any person demeaning another because of their skin color, cultural background, or, for that matter, any percieved difference can be defined as racist or bigoted.
