We are about to get Wireless Internet piped into our home. I have a wireless desktop card in my computer that can search for wireless connections. I was wondering if when we get wireless on the main computer, if, by using the wireless card, I could pick up the connection in my bedroom. I was hoping I could eliminate the need for a router. Thanks guys!!

You definitely need a router.the router is transmitting the signal, the wireless card is receiving the signal.you can hook up the main computer using ethernet cable to the router then the rest of the computers should have wireless card to be able to connect wirelessly to the router.

Are you talking about WiFi or Satellite or EVDO or some other technology? Getting wireless piped into your home would suggest satellite internet? Or do you mean getting dsl or cable and using a wireless router to distribute it to everyone?

if you are talking about WiFi, you will need a wifi router in your home. Your reception to the network will depend on how close to the router you are as well as any obstructions (like walls) between you and the router. Think of it as a cordless phone in the home. It'll pretty much have the same type of coverage.

If you are talking about sat or evdo i think only one client can use it at a given time so one machine would need to connect to it and it would need to share it with everyone else using wifi. (there are some wifi routers out there that has a slot for evdo cards but are pricey i think.

If you can clear up what kind of wireless you are getting we can target the answer better.

The main computer will be hooked up to the router, the wireless card in your computer will connect to the router. You have to install the DSL disc they have given you, (that you put in the main computer), into your cd,(dvd),-rom, and load it into your computer. When it asks if this is the first computer?, tell it no. Let it load all the way,(takes time believe me, 30 minutes to an hour). NOW the person who has the main computer has to go into their account, and set up an account for you. My DSL lets me put 3 users on it at no extra charge, I'm fairly certain that this is the norm. So now you can set in another room with no wires attached to your computer, and access the net!

The router is what sends the signal from the modem to the wireless card. You may be able to create a wirless access point on the the other PC but I would go with a router.

Well, a router cost about 40 dollars. If you put it in you mainroom, you can get wireless everywhere. Other than that, you can get it with a long ethernet cable.

No way around it.
