Me and a friend want to visit the Grand Canyon, see Niagra Falls, tour the Mall of America, and see Mount Rushmore.

How is the best way to go around this?
How do we make it cheap?
Do you have any great ideas?
Is there anything that we need to know?

Well, if you are going to Grand Canyon first, after that I would go to Yellowstone (Mount Rushmore), then Mall of America in Saint Paul, MN, then to Niagara Falls.
As for keeping the price down:
1) Camp where you can (national parks). Just make sure you bring warm clothes. Grand Canyon is at 7000 feet and even in the summer it gets cold at night (50's and 40's). And get RESERVATIONS. These are popular national parks and can be booked up to 6 months in advance. www.nps.gov can help you with that as well as park info to plan your stay
2) Stay out of CA as much as possible. Gas right now is about $3.09/gal in Bakersfield, CA and we are usually cheaper than say LA.
3) Try not to buy food "as you go". By this I mean go to a supermarket/Wal-mart and stock up on soda and snacks. If you figure a 12 pack of coke costs about $4.00 and one 20oz bottle costs about $1.30, you do the math. Also, healthy snacks in the car can help keep you alert.
4) If your car is made to take 87 gas, make sure you put 87 or better in it. In some states they sell 86 gas. It may be less expensive, but your gas mileage will be horrible and you will spend more in the long run.

And, lastly, before you leave, get AAA (or something similar) membership. Find out how far they will tow you for free and maybe up grade. They will also give you free maps, tour books, and may other services. Besides, a AAA membership is usually good for about 10% off a hotel room.
