What is the name of this science fiction book?????

A space ship enters the Earth's atmosphere and just stays there for about 50 years. No contact or anything. Things on Earth change. People stop fighting, etc. because everybody is too focused on the huge space ship up in the sky. I read this years ago and would like to read it again, but I can't remember the name of it or the author. Can you help?

may be childhoods end but could also be "the lights in the sky are stars"
