That would depend on how you define help. A large part of this class of people cannot adjust to the 'norms" of society, and many are mentally ill as well. Even if you gave them a house, it would be trashed or abandoned in short order. There are of course exceptions, such as a family who had been living on the edge and lost a job, and couldn't find another et cetera.
It is never wrong to help a fellow human being in need, but the homeless (who in a less "politically correct" time were called "bums") will usually squander any monetary help on booze or drugs. They live a diferrent reality than productive members of society, and this is what many people just can't understand. Many are bums by choice, having given up on the "American Dream" for any number of reasons. Couldn't handle the responsibility of job, family, and just dropped out entirely, so as to have as little responsibility as humanly possible, to go wherever they wanted, whenever they wanted, with no-one to answer to for it. After a long enough time of living like this, the idea of returning to being a productive member of society becomes intolerable....rather live off the kindness of strangers, and go wherever the weather permits sleeping outside. SO again, I ask you, what kind of "help" do you mean? These people do not starve. They only lack all the material comforts we take for granted....and they don't miss them, or want anything they have to take care of but themselves.

That depends on what you're classifying as "help" and, frankly, the homeless to whom you are providing said help.

First, let's look at 5 different kinds of homeless people: 1) people with alcohol & other drug abuse issues, 2) people with mental illness, 3) the chronically unemployed and/or fiscally irresponsible (which could fall into either of the aforementioned categories), 4) the employed poor, and 5) people who have experienced disaster, like flood, fire, or other naturally occurring phenomenon. Now, there may be individuals or families who fit more than one of the above scenarios.

Because I have to leave 5 minutes ago, let me try to make this short & sweet:

Pro: getting people off the street.
Pro: facilitating healing and self-sufficiency.

Con: the "revolving door" of shelters - many see the same faces over and over and over again, regardless on the interventions and assistance provided.

O.K. Gotta go. I'll edit later.

PROS-these people have NOTHING! it makes them feel much better when they know they will be having dinner, they are going to sleep in a bed, they are going to get some new clothes, or a beer, anything. america is THRIVING in its economy while 700,000 americans dont have a HOME, or even something to eat. this number is a third children! i mean, the pros should be obvious, and there should be no cons. but a con could be that if you give a bum money, or even food stamps, then he will be able to spend that money on drugs. and if he has food stamps, then he wont have to pan handle for food money, but money for drugs. but drug-addicted bums are not the only ones. there are thousands of families that need help! another con could be if they keep getting financial aid, they will not be motivated to find money by themselves.

By helping the homeless only keeps them on the street not off the street, they are there by choice.
