I have just set up a small business but have not registered the business name in my state, nor do not have a business bank account, just my personal bank account. A client issued me a check but accidentally wrote it out to my company name, not my real name - can I still deposit it?

I thought I've heard of cosigned checks in the past or am I making this up? Thanks...

Register your business.

If it was so easy to cash someone else's check, there would be a problem, even though this is technically your check.

I used to work at a bank, and the only way to cash a third party check is if that person is there and gives permission to you, or the amount of your check. BUT in both cases you must have a great standing with the bank.

It's not that hard to register your new business.

Most banks no longer accept checks for deposit or being cashed unless it is in your name. If you have been a client of the bank a while and they know you, you may be able to get them to accept the fact that you have not yet registered the business name and opened a business account yet. But it would probably be a lot easier and less time consuming to ask your client to remake the check in your name.

I have a small business as well and have yet to name it or open a business account. So far when someone has written me a check, they always write it to me. I would think if you sign the check.."your name" owner of "what the person wrote the check to" and explain this to the teller this should work this time. if the teller has any questions, she might refer you to someone else in the bank that is in management and is qualified to make the decision. Otherwise, I would have the person who wrote the check to write another if possible..or go and get a business license at your local court house...usually very inexpensive..and then take this license with you to the bank. Then take care of your business account as soon as possible. Hope this helps and good luck with your business!

make an atm deposit then there are no questions asked!

otherwise i have made deposits with 3rd party names on the checks at tellers so you can get away with it just dont make a big deal about it

otherwise there are some "shady" check cashing joints in every downtown area

(i say shady only bc of the people who hang out there not the legality of the biz)

what you are talking about is when the person who the check is made out to signs it over to a third party (in front of the teller) and some banks won't even do it. its called 'third-party check' or 'double endorsed' check.

in any case, how can you prove that you are the rightful recipient for monies paid to the company that, for all intents and purposes, doesn't really exist?

double-endorsed only works when the person signing it over can prove that the check was made out to them by showing ID and they have the right to sign it over to someone else.

just return the check and ask for one made out to you.

If the verify is made out to individual #a million AND individual #2, etc. then you certainly all ought to sign. If the verify is made out to individual #a million OR individual #2 etc. then purely certainly one of you will ought to sign. the least confusing element may well be to speak on your landlord and ask him to the two a million) Make the inspect to purely certainly one of you (he will require you all sign a waiver) or 2) ask the owner to divide the protection deposit via 4 and difficulty separate assessments to each of you. you ought to purely deposit it into the ATM. there is no fee at maximum. there is likewise no longer a teller to end you and make you persist with the regulations. although, your landlord or his economic employer ought to deliver it returned for improper endorsement. certainly, this implies that the payees did no longer sign wisely. whether that's sent returned no longer purely will the unique verify volume be debited out of your account, yet there is likely a fee that BoA will charge for a back verify. good success, yet any economic employer ought to tell you a similar element. all of them ought to declare. For all the economic employer knows you're stealing your roommates shares :)
