It depends on what you like to do. Some people really enjoy melee, so they choose a warrior. Others like magic, so a mage or a warlock is their best bet. I just started a hunter character and it's interesting because of all the variety, you can tame pets and set traps.
If you're trying to start a character but you don't know what to choose, you may just want to create a few different ones and start experimenting with them. You'll probably find that you enjoy playing a certain class more than others.
For myself, my favorite class is the druid. Depending on how you distribute your talent points and what sort of gear you have, you can be a healer, a tank or a DPS class, all in one.

Back when I played, I was a Priest. It may not seem glamourous, but you'll always be sought after for parties. In addition, you are the person that pretty much determines whether your party lives or wipes.
Of course, being a priest is also the most frustrating class. You don't get enough credit when you do your job well, and you get all the blame when things go wrong.
Expect to hear "WTF, heal me!!!" as the rouge jumps around the area, because he thought a having a priest around meant that he could pull aggro off the tank with no repercussions, or after the warrior fears the enemy he's attacking into a giant mob and they all come after him.
