How much time and money are you willing to invest? If lack of time is a problem, don't look at a dog. They require a lot of attention and house training is a chore.
Cats are good if you don't mind cleaning litter boxes.
Keep in mind that most pets require vet visits except for fish and pet rocks, but fish have very special dietary needs and the tanks need to be kept clean.
BTW if you decide on either a dog or a cat do yourself a favor and find one at a shelter. There are so many there that need a home. I can almost guarantee they will love you no matter what.

As much as i love dogs, if this child goes to school and the parents don't want to take care of the pet, i would say a cat. They can be independent during the day and friendly and cuddly when the child is home. They don't have to be let out to go to the bathroom and don't need regular walks like dogs do. Their food and toys are less expensive, because they are smaller than the average dog. I don't really like small kids to have rodents, because most are prey animals and do not naturally like to be held. Cats, however, are small predatory animals and many love to sit on their owners' laps. Whatever pet you choose for your child, be sure to find a vet immediately and get him/her animal fixed and immunized. Do your homework on the animal first to be sure it will work. Good Luck =)

A dog.. by far. Your child ( or you?) can learn to grow with it and grow up learning how to deal with responsibilities. A dog can be your childs ( or your) best friend and a lot of times that is what a kid really needs when being the only child... It is like having a brother or sister around. It is a lot of work and of course the child ( or you ) can't do it all by themselves but it sure teaches them what responsibilty, reliability and compassion is!

Consider rats. They are smart like dogs, clean like cats, and take up little room in your home. Rats are easier and less costly to care for than a dog, and much more friendly and interactive than hamsters. If you give them a chance, you'll find a GREAT pet.

That all depends on how much time you have to spend with the animal.A dog is a good choice if you have lots of time to spend with him or her.A cat if you want a more independent pet.You of course have to feed and water. With a busy life style a cat is best.

I think a dog would be best for an only child. It would give them someone to play with when their friends can't play.

If you have time then a dog or cat. I don't have a lot of time so I have two rats. They ride on my shoulders everywhere I go. They keep me company and are great pals. I would not get male rats though. Females are so much easier!:)
