Helios H4000 is the only manufacturer that makes a set top dvd player that will upscale to 1080i thru component hookup.
we have one plus the Helios 3000 from last year. both are hooked to a HD plasma and a HD lcd.
the 4000 will upscale to 1080p if your tv supports it. Our dvd picture looks as sharp and as clear as our cable HD channels but you need to read the manual and do the setup correctly or it won't work right.
Note:
due to macrovision copy protection, any upscale dvd player bought in the USA will automatically DOWN COVERT to standard dvd resolution [480p] if it detects a component hookup . reason?
both ends of a component cable are identical thus it wants to keep you from making copies,
thus MacroProtection.
Helios is the only dvd player that will upscale to HD thru both hdmi or component hookup.
even if it's not true HD,it looks like HD and good enough that we won't need to spring big bucks for a blue ray anytime soon as long as Helios is still around..

You don't need an upconverting DVD player.
Every HDTV can (and will) upscale a DVD movie to its native resolution.
HDMI may offer some minor benefits, but with component out, just buy the cheapest DVD player and let your TV do all the upconversion (unless you strongly believe that your TV has a bad scaler/deinterlacer)

Its the DVD the common of duplicate of a few DVDs is rather undesirable i found this out via checking out different gamers looks like the sony ps3 is the only one on the industry which will play just about something. via the way in case you're employing HDMI this is the only thank you to circulate.

My understanding is that only HDMI & DVI cables are the only ones that will carry 1080i. I may be wrong.

Hi Wallace,
A Blu Ray or HD DVD will do it but then you are stuck with VERY expensive media.
