My son was born at 33w 1d due to preeclampsia due to a car accident that was not our fault. He spent 1 month(from March 7th to April 7th) in the NICU 60 miles away from our home. We visited him every day for a couple of hours, and I cried almost every time we had to leave.

He is now 1 year old and he's a mess. He's jabbering all the time, crawls at the speed of light, and is trying to figure out how to walk.

To anyone who is dealing with the NICU now, it does get better!

I have one child and she wasnt a preemie (she was actually 10 days late) but my aunt had a preemie. My cousin Stephanie was born at 24 weeks 22 years ago. She had to be given oxygen at birth and she ended up blind. They said it was the oxygen that did it. She is also slightly mentally challenged. She weighed just over 1 pound and could literally fit into the palm of your hand. She stayed in the hospital until she was almost 1 year old. The doctors told my aunt that she wouldnt make it past her first birthday. She is 22 years old now and is doing well for herself despite her mental and physical handicaps. She lives and works at a home for the mentally challenged and also has a job on the side creating braille menus for local restaurants. She's a very kind, happy person who always has a nice word for everybody. She's the type of person who puts family first and she's always calling different famiy members just to see how they're doing and to say hi. Some people think that handicapped people aren't going to be able to do anything with their life and will always be a burden on society and/or their family members. Stephanie proves all those people wrong. She's definitely a fighter.

Congrats to your little girl! Wow, 10 years old! What a milestone...and how amazing it is to know that these tiny preemies thrive and do so well in life!

My little girl was born at 27 weeks also, weighing 1 lb. 14 oz. and was in the NICU for 4 months. She faced the typical preemie problems and had a long hard road ahead of her, but she's now 13 months old and doing amazing!

Congratulations! Those are the kinds of stories I really LIKE to hear about. We had a grandson born 3 months early, and he, too was 2 pounds, 1 ounce. He was in neo-natal ICU for 3 months before he was released. He's always been "a little" developmentally delayed, but he is "outgrowing" most of his problems. He will be turning 9 this May, and is our real miracle baby.

Twenty years ago, these children may not have survived. Isn't it WONDERFUL that we've developed the technology to save them!

My twins were born at 37 wks, so I was very lucky, but WOW,
your little girl is definately a miracle, especially being born 10yrs ago! Technology has advanced so much since then. The earliest I've heard being born & survived is 21 or 22 wks (can't remember which) And that was fairly recent. My sister in law had a baby Sept. 9, 1999 and she was due in Dec. I think she was slightly over 2lbs. she is a very healthy 7yr old, now. Truly amazing!

Congrats! I, too, am a mother of a preemie. He was born weighing 1 pound 6 ounces at 26 weeks. He has overcome so much! He will be 12 in June.

Yes! My son was born at 27w6d weighing in at a whopping 2lbs3oz. I spent 4.5 weeks on the high risk ward before he was born. I had to have a cerclage to try to keep him "cooking" just to have him come out of the oven early (due to HELLP syndrome). Then he spent 11 weeks in the NICU! He's been home for 2 weeks now & is tipping the scale at 6lbs 9oz! I can't wait for his little body to "catch up" to his true age. He's such a fighter! Congrats on your daughter. What a miracle baby she was!
