I think my baby (11 week old boy) might have reflux. He fuses when he nurses and afterwards sometimes doesn't like being laid flat, and then fusses a lot and arches his back and his legs get straight and stiff? And when he cries sometimes it's like a coughing cry, like the beggining of a cough and then a cry over and over? Any help would be appreciated 1st baby!

my last bupper (now 7 months old) has reflux. She was born at 28 weeks and spent a while in the NICU... Since she was born so early she was prone to having reflux.

One thing that you may want to do is trying to lay your son at a slight incline (like 25 degrees) when you do lay him down to sleep. And before you lay him down, have him sit up for at least 30 minutes after eating and a good belch. This will help either the food stay down, or the gas move up and down (which ever the case may be)

That is what i was first told with my DD. When that did not work, we were to do all of the above and add a little bit of rice cereal to her formula for meals to help keep the formula down.

When that didn't help we were told to lay her on her tummy to sleep by the doctors (still at the incline).

When that didn't work (lol) we had a upper GI study done to see what the problem was. It came back that hers was so bad she is now on medication for it but she is growing out of it (she is on reglan). We also stopped using the rice cereal and started using a jell form of thickener called SimplyThick (one packet per 8 oz).... she has been on all of this for about 5 months now and all is going GREAT!
---------------

EDITED TO ADD (I've been doing hair for the past hour or so and i just thought about this):

What helped diagnose if it was really reflux was that Each time she was fed i would record the time, how many oz she ate and how long it took for her to eat. the biggest problem for her was she is a greedy little piggy and she would not breathe when she ate and ate too fast. this caused a lot of gas that forced her to toss her cookies too. When i would give her half of her feeding, burped her in the middle of the feeding (yes she fussed but she got used to it. lol) then gave her the rest of her feeding and burped her again... the problems drastically changed. her formula had to be changed a few times also so she would gain weight and not be so gassy or constipated, so that is what took the doctors so long to diagnose her with reflux.

If he is not actually throwing up, it could be he is gassy. If he is on formula, you might want to check about it being changed to break up better in his tiny tummy. DD was on powder formula for a while and it treated her belly AWFUL! She was down right miserable to the point where we had to give her a enema when she had not had a BM in over 3 days. once we got her switched to the ready to feed formula, THE BM GATES OPENED!

If you are breastfeeding (you said nursing right?), it could be what you are eating that upsets his tummy. Chart what you eat each day and on days that you notice him being more fussy then normal look back on what you ate that day. What you ate could attribute to him being uncomfortable. I was 'wet nurse' for one baby i was caring for and when i ate something spicy, she paid for it too. (tho the others never had a problem).

Listen to 23 weeks..she knows what she is taking about.

I have a preemie, he was born at 28 weeks and he is on reglan and simply thick...it is wonderful stuff for babies with reflux.....you simply add it to thier bottle....You can buy it online and I would recommend the Simply Thick nectar not the simply thick honey.....

My daughter had it too, she was a preemie and seemed to do much better once we introduced solids.....she is now two and has no problems with reflux or any residual problems.

You have to find a Dr who will listen to you.....one of the best things you can do as a new parent is find a good dr and develop a relationship...

Best of luck to you, email me if you have any questions...

could just be gassy. my baby had acid reflux & she threw up often & over time began having seizure-like actions when the reflux would build up...

try some mylicon drops if you cannot get in to see the dr right away. they are found in any pharmacy- oover the counter & are safe for babies of all ages... it will help eliminate gas.

another good exercise is to lay him flat & push his knees up to his chest, 10 repitions 3x/day (sometime after feeding & burping).

either way, call the dr asap, my baby needed zyrtec (med ins would not approve pepcid, it is the better choice if you can get it!!)

good luck & try not to worry too much, we're 14 months in with our first & she's doing great & OFF the meds. the acid reflux does correct itself usually by 12 months if that's what it is.

It could be collick, which is a digestive problem. It sounds like how my mom discribes my babyhood (I had extreme collick for a very long time). My nephew had a similar reaction to eating until my sister found one particular kind of pre-made (not powder but fully mixed and liquid) formula that he seemed to do better with.

If you are breastfeeding, try to change your diet. I have heard from many people that if you eat spicy foods it affects the breast milk and it is harder for babies to swallow and digest. I have also heard that if mothers eat chocolate the babies will have a terrible time digesting it. I've never breastfed, but from the friends who have, that is what they tell me.

Check with your pediatrician to be sure.
