My brother was just telling me about a book that he saw in Boarders and he cant remember the name of it. Its a picture book. Apparently a woman got permission from a bunch of family members in Harlem to take pictures of their dead family members posed in different positions (not in caskets) with objects and other people...

Has anyone heard or seen this?

lol i have gotten a few emails asking "why was he looking at dead people" He is a photographer. He was looking at different picture books at boarders for different views of how other photographers see things and to get ideas for his different photo shoots. We have books all over the place. He had read about this book in a local magazine a few months ago and just happend to come across it the other day in the store. We were talking about a upcoming shoot and he remembered seeing the book as i was talking about a concept i had. So he shared it with me.

lol freaky i know!

Sounds like your brother got his hands on a copy of "THE HARLEM BOOK OF THE DEAD" with pictures by James Van Der Zee, poems by Owen Dodson, text by Camille Billops, foreword by Toni Morrison. This classic collection of post-mortem photos has the feel of a family photo album. Yet none of the subjects were known to the photographer in life. James Van Der Zee took the pictures at funeral homes in Harlem between 1916 and 1969. We learn what he remembers about the dead he commemorated through a 1991 interview conducted by Camille Billops. In the gossipy text, Van Der Zee comments on life at the time the photos were taken and makes relatively little reference to the photos themselves.

This book is available for sale at http://www.amazon.com/Harlem-Dodson-Camille-Billops-Morrison/dp/B000IFF8RW

and more info on the book itself can be found at: http://www.booksaboutbodies.com/memorial.htm Its the 2nd book down from the top.

Hope this helps.

I would ask your brother to go back to Borders and find the title for you. You could also try calling the store, they might know.
