How can you tell if the windows xp professional disk is an upgrade or complete install? It says sp2.

If you have the box, it should say UPGRADE in the top, right hand corner (right under Microsoft). It should also be labelled on the disk. Look for it in the top left side. My guess is if you can't find it on the disk, it's a full install. "SP2" just means that it has Service Pack 2 on the disk, so you don't have to go get the download, though, there will still be updates that need to be done.

That is most likely a complete install.

A complete install is really the best way to install an o/s.

the later versions of XP came with service pack two on the installation cd so there isn't any difference between one that came with sp2 and one that came with sp1 and had sp2 installed later
so to answer your question you can't tell

It would say upgrage somewhere on the disk.
