My father died in 1990. He was on board the USS BLock Island and it wasn't and aircraft carrier. It was torpeoded by the Japanese with three torpeodoes. My father was in the mess hall at the time and one came through the wall right behind him. He never talked about it much and I want to learn more about the ship and the battle they were in.

EDIT:

if you believe it was not the type of ship pictured then it was not a US Navy ship, there was a merchant ship "SS Block Island" but that was sunk August 1941 before the US got into WWII.
