Hawes and Southworth was a photography studio in the mid-19th Century, based out of Boston. They worked exclusively with daguerreotypes, an early form of photography that involved chemically sensitive metal plates to capture images. Essentially, daguerreotypes were a difficult, cumbersome, and very technical method of capturing images. Hawes and Southworth were lauded for producing some of the finest early photography, capturing levels of detail that most others--for various reasons--could not reproduce. Remember also that daguerreotyping was a process that quickly became outmoded by the introduction of paper photography techniques. Hawes and Southworth, however, remained dedicated to the daguerreotype process, producing images of often better quality than other available methods. This raised their level of photography to a form of art.

Well I can tell you it isn't a painting. A dagurreotype is a form of early photography. Try searching medical history or history of photography databases.
