What makes a painting great is ts ability to communicate the artist's intent to the viewer... and further, its ability to emotionally MOVE the viewer through this communication.

Lots of painting are great, but I think they truly become art when you can tell the artist put all he or she could into it, without caring what others would think of it. I'm not a fan of pretty paintings of flowers and stuff like that. When the piece is really about something and shows you an honest piece of life, and reveals the truth, whether it be an honest to goodness portrait including wrinkles, bags and the whole bit, or anything that is completely un-sugar coated, that's what's great.
Paintings are nice when they're made to look pretty hanging in someone's kitchen. They're great when they have a deeper purpose.

Your judgement. If it's 'great' to you, then it's great. Art is ultimately subjective.
